Could It Be Any Darker Today?

Well, in short, no, if you're in the Northern Hemisphere, that is. Depending on how you look at it, it's either the shortest day or longest night of the year. Either way, Winter begins today.

The Winter Solstice marks the second time of the year the sun is the greatest distance from the celestial equator. Because of the tilt of the earth this time of year, the earth receives less sun. Known as Yule to ancient Europeans and Scandinavians, the Winter Solstice is steeped in pagan rituals -- some of which are still celebrated today. "How?" you ask wanting to party like a pagan.

A time for rejoicing (because from this day forward each day gets just a little longer) these pagan folks would celebrate with a customary burning of the Yule log. A large, strong tree was chosen; after being drenched in oils and topped with evergreens and rosemary, the Yule log was burned to honor the sun. The ashes were later sprinkled in the fields for hope of a fertile growing season.

If the opportunity doesn't present itself to enjoy a Yule log, you can simply burn evergreen and/or rosemary scented incense or candles. Under the glowing light, sip on a nice hot cup Wassail, while "enjoying" a slice of - you guessed it - fruitcake. That's right, these pagans would honor the Mother Goddess by celebrating in the orchards. After decorating the orchard with fruitcakes, they would continue on by sprinkling their own favorite Wassail mixture on the roots of the trees praying for a strong harvest in the year to come. Not a bad way to spend your time on the longest night of the year!
