Happy Hanukkah ~ Part 2: The Story

The story of Hanukkah began about 2,200 years ago when the Greek-Syrian King, Antiochus IV (King Nasty), not only tried to force the Greek culture on the Jewish people in Palestine, he forbade them from their religious practices and study of the Torah. King Nasty sent his army to Jerusalem to take-down the Jewish temple. Not to be done in - a heavily out-numbered band of Jews fought for THREE years and WON back their religious freedom!

In your face King Nasty!

As these war-torn Jews set about to rededicate their holy temple on Jerusalem's Mount Moriah - Hanukkah is Hebrew for "dedication" - they searched for olive oil to rekindle the perpetual flame of the temple's menorah. Only a small vile of sanctified oil was found - really only one night's worth - miraculously, the oil lasted for eight days - enough time that oil suitable for the temple could be made.

So if you didn't before, you now know why the lighting of the menorah is a significant part of the Hanukkah celebration. Stay-tuned for postings on the oil-happy foods of Hanukkah. Yum yum.
